All about practice.
Whether it is discipline, leadership or showing someone they matter, it all comes down to practice.
While some of these may fit into boxes of common sense - a gap lives between the idea and the reality. And that gap is practice.
On discipline: such a big scary word for some. Imagine if, discipline was as easy as remembering to brush your teeth in the morning. And it is! Discipline is being faced with 1000+ decisions each day and choosing the course that you know will make you feel great or keep you in line. Consider first what it is you want (ie: I want to be more productive. I will set my alarm for 6am everyday. This is discipline.) Remember it is the practice that becomes the habit. Not the other way. Start small. Earn your wins. And then progress.
On leadership: leadership is a choice and a practice we commit to everyday. It is not based on a title but rather the experience you produce. If in a situation you look to the person next to you on your left and your right and then make a call that will help both - that is showing leadership. Thinking beyond one’s self. How do we make this happen? Practice. Small decisions that impact others. How can I serve you?
On mattering: make a note of your team’s latest update. New dog, renovation, new baby, vacation. Whatever it is- make a note so you have something to remember about them. Feeling remembered is magic. Giving someone the experience of feeling like they matter, makes them want to matter. And when they want to matter, they try harder.
You now have a few new tools you can leverage. What is it that you would like to practice? In what area will it serve you to focus?
Keep me posted with your first step (ie: setting an alarm, taking a note, thinking of someone else). Don’t forget to track your progress! We wouldn’t want to miss your wins.
